Approved by the Atlanta City Council in 2021, the plan has been met with months-long opposition from neighbors and protesters concerned with the destruction of the forest at a time of intensifying climate change and environmental racism. Protesters are also alarmed by the expansion of policing and its associated violence, and “Stop Cop City” has become a national rallying cry for environmental and racial justice movements. Law enforcement, in turn, has responded with a ferocious crackdown that has left one forest defender killed (Georgia state troopers riddled 26-year-old Manuel “Tortuguita” Terán with 57 bullets in January) and 42 charged with domestic terrorism. Three organizers with the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, a bail fund, are now facing money laundering and charity fraud charges, following SWAT arrests at the end of May.

[...]

Some union leaders say the fight to stop Cop City has significant stakes for the labor movement as a whole. “Working people always have to be wary of any repression against protesters, because there is a history in our country that once it’s used against anyone protesting government policies, it can be turned against workers in their union,” Carl Rosen, the general president of UE, says over the phone from Erie, Pennsylvania, where 1,400 UE members who work for Wabtec Corp. could soon go out on strike.

[...]

“Cops are the first line of defense for business owners and employers, so I think it makes sense for labor to be opposed to Cop City,” he says. “These cops are being trained at Cop City and will use the tactics they learn to crush our strike if we go out.

Please Help A Mostly Queer Homeless Family Out This Pride Month?

So we have gotten our overdrafts covered! All without overdraft fees (double yay)! So that's one less thing to worry about. I have a loan repayment coming out again tomorrow, now that I have money in my account, and I'm waiting on the other loan to go through since the website says there's a payment pending.

But we need help with three things still:

1 - Gas & laundry money. We have to go to Fallbrook again this week (probably on the 8th, since my mom and I will have mail to pick up that day) to pull all the laundry out of our upstairs storage unit, wash it, and put it back in, along with spraying the front of it with Lysol air freshener and butting in a charcoal deodorizer, because it smells like cat urine and we'll get kicked out if we don't take care of it soon. We don't have the money of strength to move two units out, so we're going to do what we can to minimize the odor. But I need $40 for gas (it's cheapest at the 7-11 in Bonsall, since I can save 11 cents a gallon) and $20 for laundry to cover an extra wash and a dry that will get it all dry.

2 - A hotel room for my mom's 50th high school reunion/a manicure for my mother. I know it seems frivolous, but my mom graduated from a high school in the area and this is the first reunion after one of the big celebratory people in her class has died, plus it's the 50th, which is a pretty big milestone. We need a hotel for three days to keep the cats out of the car and to have a place to shower/get ready/leave the kidlet for the actual reunion (there's also an all-class picnic which is during the day that the kidlet is invited to, but we don't want the cats in the sun all day). We need it for the 24th through the 26th. We want to try and stay at the Motel 6 on Pio Pico Drive, as the room is all tile and the TV accommodates my son's X-Box, which will keep him entertained while we're gone. I'd also like to get my mom a manicure because her nails keep breaking from still being brittle after chemo, and she deserves a treat. We're looking at $400 for all of this.

3 - Anything off our Amazon wish list. We just ordered new medicine storage bags for me and my mom, as ours have been ruined by the cats/time, and we're going to add food to the list as we have storage space in the car for it, but I'm getting signs I'm going to start my menstrual cycle soon, and I could really use the portable heating pad. And anything else already on the list would be a huge help. The list is here.

I’m watching that documentary “Before Stonewall” about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.

The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one “known homosexual”. The “known homosexual” is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.

So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there’s nothing wrong with him mentally and he’s never been arrested. When asked whether he’d take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows he’s gay, he says that they didn’t up until tonight, but he guesses they’re going to find out, and he’ll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like …why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says “I think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.”

1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.

Despite the pseudonym, Dale’s boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.

Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson’s disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.

It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought I’d make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.

Autistic Inertia is an autism experience that makes it hard to start, stop, and switch tasks.

It somehow doesn't get talked about enough - so I made this comic!

YouTubeInstagramTwitter

Also, if you want to read the research study I based this comic on, it’s right here!

cypopps

Since I posted this on other platforms and got these questions a lot:

ISN’T THIS EXECUTIVE DYSFUNCTION / ADHD?

A lot of people keep relating this topic to ADHD or executive dysfunction. The study itself (linked in the post) says executive dysfunction may contribute to Autistic Inertia, but it is not known at this time! It might be possible, we just don’t know.

There are also other non-executive dysfunction related possible causes, which would distance it from ADHD.

The brain thinking to move, but the body not responding, is a trait more associated with Autism than ADHD (to my own knowledge).

I RELATE TO THIS! DO I HAVE AUTISM???

If you relate to this it does not mean you have autism. There are other explanations and similar experiences, always do your own research.

This is not part of the diagnosable criteria for autism. This is just a common experience some autistic people have. This is not even experienced by all autistic people, as everyone is different!

If you are autistic and experience this, you aren’t alone! ❤️

snugglyporos

// So I didn’t know this was a thing other people had?

I often describe my autistic experience as ‘the wall’ in that it’s a wall I constantly have to fight to do anything at all. That it’s extremely difficult to do basic things like eat or work because my brain simply will. not. cooperate.

Like there are days where I lay in bed. immoveable. And I think ‘I should get up. I should move my body now.’ And I don’t. I sit there. immoveable. Physically immoveable, I mean. Think like sleep paralysis, only I’m aware that I could move, I suppose. Just thinking ‘move! get up!’ and I don’t. I just lay there.

And this effects everything in my life. I struggle to work and do a lot of things because I sit there and my brain is screaming ‘WORK! Do the thing!’ and my hands refuse to do what my brain is demanding.

I’ve been on every kind of adhd medication for this, and none of it really helps.

So I’m pretty amazed this is a common experience with other autistic people.

The largest mass shooting in American history was a hate crime against gay people. Don’t ever forget that.

June 12, 2016. Putting a date on this for when it gets reblogged months from now by people who think the post is about something from 30, 40 years ago.

butch-reidentified

I am a survivor of the Pulse nightclub shooting, having grown up in Orlando and just turned 20 a month prior. If you didn’t know, there were several families who refused to claim the bodies of their relatives due to their sexuality. One family even had their relative’s name removed from the memorial. Murdered by the same hate with which their families reject them in both life and death.

Many, many people celebrated Pulse. We were told we deserved it. That it was God’s punishment for our sin of loving the same sex. We are sent messages like these I received in 2018:

image

We in the community often call the victim count 49+ to include the survivors who couldn’t live with the pain.

The event was never officially declared a hate crime or targeted homophobic attack and is rarely listed as one in databases.

At our vigils for those slaughtered, Extremist Christian groups showed up to protest, holding signs like this:

image

ID: Me kissing a woman I was casually seeing in front of an angry looking man with a “Sodomy is Sin” sign.

Please understand how much more than just a mass shooting this was. We are still to this day harassed and told we deserved it by some.

This year was the sixth anniversary. The first couple years I received dozens of messages checking in on me on 6/12. Year 5 got enough news coverage for people to think to reach out to me. This year it was my therapist, the woman I kissed in that photo, and a couple of other gun violence survivor friends. People are forgetting already.
